2019 Year in Review
As 2019 comes to an end, we celebrate Global Playground’s most successful year yet thanks to the help of loyal supporters like you! This year, we have funded the construction of schools in Kenya, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, a cultural enrichment program for orphaned children in Kenya, and 20 new laptops for children at the Global Playground funded school in Honduras. We have big dreams for 2020 and numerous proposals to consider. With your continued support we can make them a reality.
Kenya
Thanks to the new $35,000 science labs at the Sirua Aulo High School in rural Kenya, 150 students will no longer just read about science in books. Now, they will experience the excitement of exploring science through hands-on experiments and will develop the skills to pursue further learning after high school. Sirua Aulo High School consistently has the best performance on national exams in the region. Village Volunteers has been an instrumental partner in making this project a success.
Global Playground partnered with The Samburu Project to create an opportunity for 18 children who live in an orphanage in Samburu, Kenya to visit Samburu National Park. The children learned about conservation with Save the Elephants and their own cultural and historical connection to the land and animals. Despite living two miles from the park entrance, none of these students had ever had the opportunity to enter the park and see the wildlife.
Sierra Leone
In Bo District, Sierra Leone, Global Playground supported Village Care Initiatives-Sierra Leone (VCI-SL) by fully funding the $20,000 rebuild of Kwadima Primary School, which transformed the space from a dilapidated wood building to larger modern facility that will create a healthy environment for more than 150 children to learn for years to come.
Liberia
Construction continues on the new Monrovia Football Academy school which includes a $20,500 technology hub funded by Global Playground providing more than 100 students with MFA's first permanent location. Students from MFA were busy this summer with a cross-cultural trip to the United States. The MFA Girls Under-15 soccer team won a tournament in Minnesota and also had the opportunity to meet and train with players from the Major League Soccer's Minnesota United team before their summer match against Aston Villa.
Honduras
Finally, children in Villa Soleada Bilingual School in Honduras, where Global Playground has previously supported a technology center with Student Helping Honduras, will now have more access to 21st century learning with the help of 20 new laptops.
Thank you for your generous support. Your end-of-year donation will ensure more students around the world will access newly constructed classrooms in 2020!
